Designing a WebGIS that people actually use

Start with decisions and daily work—not the map library—and let the interface follow the operational need.

Begin with the decision

A useful WebGIS is specific about who is making a decision, which evidence they need, and what should happen next. That definition prevents an impressive map from becoming an unused catalogue of layers.

Reduce the distance to an answer

Search, filters, sensible defaults, clear legends, and focused feature details usually create more value than a long list of advanced controls. Design around the most frequent journey first.

Plan the operating model

Ownership, data updates, permissions, support, documentation, and training are product requirements. Address them during design so the platform remains useful after launch.
