A practical production GeoServer checklist
The difference between a working GeoServer and an operable service is security, data design, caching, monitoring, and disciplined publishing.
Secure the service
Remove default credentials, restrict administrative access, use HTTPS, define data-level permissions, and expose only the endpoints the application needs.
Design data for delivery
Use appropriate indexes, simplified display tables where useful, bounded requests, scale-dependent styling, and formats suited to the client experience.
Operate deliberately
Track logs and resource use, validate backups, document publishing conventions, test upgrades, and monitor the real map requests that users depend on.
